The Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) was founded by Legislative Decree No. 87 of 27 July 1973 and began its operation in the academic year 1974-1975 with the admission of students to the Departments of Civil Engineering in Xanthi and Law in Komotini. It was named “Democritus” in honor of the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus, who came from the city of Abdera in the Prefecture of Xanthi. The administrative headquarters of the University is located in the city of Komotini, which is the capital of the Administrative Region of Eastern Macedonia – Thrace, while administrative services are provided in all four of its seat cities.

The Democritus University of Thrace was, since its foundation, the first Greek regional multi-faceted university, the necessity of which did not concern exclusively educational goals. Its operation through its multi-faceted nature initially in the cities of Xanthi and Komotini and then in Alexandroupoli and Orestiada, in addition to its educational and research activity, constituted a substantial intervention in the economic development of the Thrace Region. At the same time, it contributed significantly to the strengthening of the national and cultural physiognomy of the wider region of Thrace but also to the upgrading of the living and social standard with direct and indirect actions of contribution.

The Democritus University of Thrace is among the largest Universities in the country in terms of active student population. The D.U.Th. geographically developed throughout Thrace, with 8 Schools, 20 Departments, and a multitude of Postgraduate Programs, with a student population of approximately 29,000 (undergraduate students, postgraduate students and doctoral candidates) and with research and teaching staff exceeding 700 people, it continues to be the only university institution in the Region of Eastern Macedonia – Thrace. The structure of the Study Programs it provides covers the majority of modern scientific fields with the School of Agricultural Sciences and Forestry in Orestiada, the Schools of Health Sciences and Education Sciences in Alexandroupoli, the Schools of Law, Classical & Humanities, Social Political & Economic Sciences and Physical Education & Sports in Komotini, and the Polytechnic School in Xanthi. From this description, the multidisciplinary nature of both the education provided and the research conducted is evident. Additionally, the international academic dimension of the presence of Democritus University in Thrace and the long-standing commitment of its staff to the quality of the educational services it provides has resulted in the creation of a dominant imprint in the academic current affairs of our country but also of the wider geographical region.

In a rapidly changing environment, the University of Thessaloniki continues to aim for both educational and research excellence while building on the challenges and imperatives of the future. It is reorienting its research strategy based on innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, the new digital era, large-scale development, and attracting funding from both domestic and foreign institutions. The University of Thessaloniki’s reputation today is given by its innovative postgraduate programs of international scope, but also by initiatives that allow it to overcome modern bureaucracy and geographical exclusion.

The University of Thessaloniki strives to strengthen its research profile with collaborations and projects that continue to establish it as one of the leading research institutions in Greece.
